SRINAGAR, August 6, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said that decades of injustice towards the tribal population ended in August 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370 by the Central government.
The LG made the remarks while virtually inaugurating the National Tribal Festival at Gurez, a two-day event celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Dard-Shina tribal community.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha lauded the tribal community’s vital contribution to India’s cultural fabric and paid homage to tribal icon and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda. “The Dard-Shina community is a priceless treasure of India, preserving ancient traditions and inspiring sustainable living in harmony with nature,” he said.
He highlighted the government’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to preserve tribal culture and improve socio-economic conditions. “Decades of injustice ended in August 2019. Today, numerous transformative initiatives have been launched to uplift our tribal brothers and sisters,” the LG added.
Sinha noted that Gurez was connected to the power grid for the first time in 2023 — a step he said reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive development.
On the occasion, the LG dedicated the Shina Gilgit 88.8 FM radio station to the Dard-Shina community. He urged the station to feature a dedicated weekly programme showcasing the community’s history, traditions, and values.
“Gurez has emerged as one of the top offbeat tourist destinations in the country, known for its natural beauty, culture, and serene landscapes. Community radio must echo this heritage,” he added.
Sinha also appreciated the Indian Army, Tribal Affairs Department, district administration, and voluntary organisations for their efforts in promoting the cultural legacy of the Dard-Shina community.
