New Delhi, September 5, 2025 : To strengthen weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will install four additional Doppler weather radars under Mission Mausam, taking the total number of operational radars in the region to seven.
Union Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, said the move was crucial in the wake of recent cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides that have severely affected several districts. Chairing a review meeting on the flood situation, Dr. Singh directed IMD to issue district-level forecasts for vulnerable regions in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab, stressing the need for precise hyperlocal data.
He also asked IMD and the Ministry of Earth Sciences to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of weather systems and timely alerts to local administrations to minimise loss of life and property.
Deputy Commissioners of flood-affected districts briefed the Minister on ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. Reports highlighted the restoration of damaged roads, relief camps for displaced families, and swift rescue operations — including the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in Ramban and the rescue of five workers in Kishtwar’s Rattle Power Project area.
Dr. Singh lauded the district administrations for their timely interventions, commending their efforts in restoring connectivity, ensuring essential supplies, and saving lives under challenging circumstances.
