Jammu, February 7, 2026 : In a landmark development, the first consignment of exotic breeding bulls was successfully transported from Bengaluru to Jammu and Kashmir via rail, with the shipment reaching Budgam railway station on Friday, officials said. The initiative marks the first time livestock has been moved to Kashmir over such a long distance through railway parcel vans.

A total of 23 exotic bulls were transported under the Breeding Development Programme of the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department, with logistical support from the Northern Railways’ Jammu Division. Of these, six bulls were unloaded at the Bari Brahmana goods shed in Jammu, while the remaining 17 were offloaded at Budgam goods shed in central Kashmir.

Officials said the parcel train originated from Bengaluru, Karnataka, and traversed multiple states before entering the Valley through the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), showcasing the operational strength of the rail corridor.

To ensure animal welfare, strict Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms were followed, and special ventilated chambers were used throughout the journey.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, said the initiative would significantly strengthen the region’s dairy sector.
“The arrival of high-quality exotic bulls will help improve local cattle breeds and substantially enhance milk production capacity in Kashmir,” he said.

Singhal added that rail transport reduced costs, ensured timely and safe delivery, and remained reliable even during adverse weather conditions. He noted that the move is expected to increase dairy farmers’ income and usher in a new phase of growth for the dairy industry.

“This success demonstrates that Kashmir is now fully integrated with the national freight network, opening new avenues for transportation of livestock and agricultural produce,” he said.

Railway officials described the initiative as a significant milestone in freight connectivity, reinforcing support for agriculture and allied sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
