Leh ,September 24, 2025 : At least four people were killed and 30 others injured in intense clashes between protesters and security forces during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) in Leh town of Ladakh on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

Police Firing After Violence Escalates

The protest, which was part of the ongoing agitation for statehood for Ladakh and extension of the Sixth Schedule, turned violent when demonstrators attacked a BJP office and several vehicles, officials said. Security forces resorted to police firing to bring the situation under control, leading to the casualties.

Protesters alleged that the deaths occurred due to police firing, while officials maintained that the step was taken to prevent further escalation.

Hunger Strike Triggered Protest

The shutdown was called after two of the 15 hunger strikers, who have been on a 35-day fast since September 10, were hospitalized on Tuesday evening due to deteriorating health. The hunger strike is being spearheaded by the LAB youth wing in support of the demands for Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards.

Prohibitory Orders Imposed

In response to the violence, Leh District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning the assembly of five or more persons across Leh district.

The order also prohibits rallies, processions, use of loudspeakers, and provocative statements without prior approval. Violations, the DM warned, will invite punitive action under Section 223 of the BNSS.

Official Statement

Citing the potential threat to public peace, human life, and law and order, the district magistrate said, “I am satisfied that immediate prevention and remedial measures are necessary to maintain public order and tranquility.”

Scene on the Ground

A complete shutdown was observed in Leh, with flames and smoke rising from torched vehicles and the BJP office, visible from afar. Heavy security deployment continues across the district.
