JAMMU, Aug 12, 2025 : Torrential rains have lashed several districts of Jammu, triggering flash floods, landslides, and road blockages, officials said Tuesday. The downpour damaged two structures and forced the closure of schools in Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch districts.
Between 8:30 am Monday and 6:30 am Tuesday, Reasi recorded 280.5 mm of rain, Kathua 148 mm, and Samba and Jammu 96 mm each, according to the Met department. While no casualties were reported, several areas faced severe damage.
In Poonch’s Surankote, a flash flood destroyed part of a high school, sweeping away a 200-foot shed and a sports room with records and equipment. In Rajouri’s Jaglanoo village, a cowshed collapse killed livestock.
Key roads remain blocked: Kotranka–Khawas at Kanja, Rajouri–Thanamandi–Surankote between DKG and Bufliyaz, and Ghambir Mughlan–Thanamandi at multiple points. The Jammu–Srinagar highway also saw traffic disruption due to flooding at Jagti.
In Reasi, landslides at Kandamorh have cut off routes, while the Chenab River, flowing at a high level, washed away a key road stretch at Gupt Kashi. Authorities have issued alerts, urging residents to avoid water bodies.
The MeT department has forecast rain and thunderstorms across Jammu division till Aug 15, with a red warning for Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua predicting heavy showers, lightning, and wind gusts over 60 kmph.
