BANDIPORA, May 21, 2026 : Heavy rainfall on Thursday caused a flash flood-like situation near Darul Uloom Rahimiya along the Srinagar-Bandipora road, as overflowing water and mud inundated several residential houses, damaging property and injuring two persons, officials said.
According to officials, two houses belonging to Nazir Ahmad Dar and Reyaz Ahmad Dar, sons of Ghulam Ahmad Dar and residents of Nusoo village, suffered partial damage during the incident.
Two individuals, including Muskaan and a minor, sustained minor injuries. Officials said one of the injured persons was discharged after receiving first aid, while the other was undergoing treatment at District Hospital Bandipora.
The incident sparked anger among local residents, who alleged that the flooding could have been prevented had the concerned departments acted promptly on earlier warnings regarding drainage issues in the area.
Residents claimed they had approached both the Municipal Committee and the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department a day before the incident, informing them about a blocked drain and leaking PHE pipe near the affected locality.
“We visited the Municipal office and the R&B office yesterday and even requested officials with folded hands to clear the choked drain and stop the leaking water,” said a local resident, Zahoor Ahmad.
He alleged that instead of taking action, officials from both departments blamed each other over responsibility for the issue.
Locals further claimed that an under-construction drain in the area had been narrowed compared to the older drainage system, resulting in overflow and severe waterlogging.
“The old drain was much wider. Today the destruction is visible before everyone,” residents said while demanding compensation for the affected families.
Residents also urged authorities to immediately repair the damaged road and construct a strong protection wall to prevent similar incidents in future.
Meanwhile, Tehsildar Bandipora visited the affected area to assess the damage, while Deputy Commissioner Bandipora stated that official teams had been deputed and restoration work was underway.
