KOLKATA, May 9, 2026 : In a historic political shift in West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday took oath as the state’s first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Grounds.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari amid loud chants of “Jai Shri Ram”, beating drums, and thousands of waving saffron flags, marking a dramatic new chapter in Bengal politics.
Alongside Adhikari, five other BJP MLAs were also sworn in as members of the new cabinet. The ceremony witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leadership, and chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states, turning the event into a massive show of political strength.
The BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal is being viewed as a landmark moment, ending decades of dominance by regional parties in the state. Political observers described the event as one of the most significant power shifts in Bengal’s contemporary political history.
Massive crowds gathered at Brigade Parade Grounds to witness the oath-taking ceremony, with tight security arrangements in place across Kolkata.
