New Delhi, October 7, 2025 : India achieved a significant milestone in defence indigenisation by sourcing military hardware and weapons worth ₹1.20 lakh crore from domestic industries during the financial year 2024–25, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Tuesday.

Addressing an event in New Delhi, the minister said the steady rise in domestic defence procurement reflects India’s growing self-reliance and strategic preparedness to tackle evolving national security challenges.

“In 2021–22, our capital acquisition from domestic sources was around ₹74,000 crore. By the end of 2024–25, this figure has increased to approximately ₹1,20,000 crore,” Singh said, adding that the change “is not just about data, but also about mindset.”

He underscored that the Modi government’s reforms over the past decade have been aimed at promoting indigenous design, development, and manufacturing of defence systems under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

Preparing for the New Age Battlefield

Highlighting the rapidly changing nature of warfare, Singh said the government is fully cognizant of the technological transformation occurring in modern battlefields, particularly in the realm of non-contact warfare.

“The government of India is fully aware of the changing nature of modern warfare. Today’s warfare has become completely technology-oriented. We have seen a demonstration of this in Operation Sindoor as well,” he said.

The minister stressed that systems like drones, anti-drone technologies, and advanced air-defence systems are emerging as critical components of India’s future defence strategy.

Vision for 2047: Defence Self-Reliance & Global Leadership

Rajnath Singh outlined three key strategic goals to align India’s defence progress with its broader vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047:

  1. Achieve a high degree of self-reliance in critical defence capabilities.

  2. Position India as a major global exporter in the defence sector.

  3. Advance in next-generation technologies, including niche and dual-use innovations that define modern warfare.

He reiterated that India’s defence ecosystem—powered by innovation, start-ups, and private-sector participation—will be the cornerstone of achieving this long-term strategic vision.
