Srinagar, December 8, 2025 : In a major initiative aimed at modernising and preserving the centuries-old craft of hand-spinning world-famous Pashmina wool, the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, has installed 213 modern spinning wheels (charkhas) across 16 Pashmina Spinning Training Centres in the Valley.
Each training centre is presently admitting 20 trainees, enabling large-scale skill development while strengthening the traditional Pashmina value chain. The centres are operational in Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Anantnag, and Bandipora districts.
An official spokesperson said the newly introduced modern charkhas, designed by SKUAST-Kashmir, offer significant ergonomic and productivity benefits. Unlike the traditional charkhas that forced artisans to sit on their haunches for long hours, the new machines provide improved posture support and enhanced working comfort.
“The modern spinning wheels increase daily production by nearly three times, directly boosting the income of Pashmina artisans,” the spokesperson said.
He further added that the paddle-driven charkhas enhance uniformity in Pashmina yarn count, ensuring higher quality output. “These charkhas are easy to operate, reduce physical fatigue, and provide a much-needed comfort zone to spinners who earlier endured exhausting working conditions,” he noted.
The initiative is being seen as a major step towards reviving Kashmir’s iconic Pashmina industry, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for artisans while blending tradition with modern innovation.
