New Delhi, October 3, 2025 : Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has moved the Supreme Court, seeking the immediate release of her husband. Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, following protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status, which resulted in four deaths and 90 injuries in the Union Territory. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur Jail, Rajasthan.
In her plea, filed through lawyer Sarvam Ritam Khare, Angmo has challenged the legality of Wangchuk’s detention and questioned the government’s decision to invoke the NSA against him. She further alleged that she has not received a copy of the detention order, which she claims violates statutory rules, and that she has had no contact with Wangchuk since his detention.
The Ladakh administration, meanwhile, has rejected allegations of a “witch-hunt” or any “smokescreen” operation against Wangchuk. The case is expected to draw significant national attention as it progresses in the Supreme Court.
