Srinagar, March 25, 2026 : Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday called for a review of the life imprisonment awarded to separatist leader Asiya Andrabi, urging that it be reduced to the earlier norm of a fixed 14-year term.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mufti said the concept of life imprisonment till the end of a person’s natural life should be reconsidered across the country. “It should be 14 years like it used to be before,” she remarked.
Her statement comes a day after a special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sentenced Andrabi to life imprisonment for charges including conspiracy against the State.
While expressing ideological differences with Andrabi, the former Chief Minister appealed for humanitarian consideration, citing her age and the years already spent in custody. “Humanity demands that her sentence be reconsidered,” Mufti said.
She also advocated for Andrabi’s release on parole, suggesting that even conditional relief could be considered. “The Government of India has released many people on parole. She should also be granted similar consideration,” she added.
Earlier in the day, Mufti participated in a plantation drive, urging people and party workers to plant more trees as part of environmental conservation efforts.
