The woman, identified as Sunita Bholeshwar Jamgade, a resident of Nagpur in Maharashtra, reportedly left behind her minor child when she went missing from Hunderman village near the LoC in Kargil. Authorities believe she may have deliberately crossed the border into Pakistan.
The Army, which maintains security along the LoC, was taken by surprise when reports of the woman’s disappearance from Hunderman village surfaced. A lookout notice was subsequently issued by the police on May 15 in efforts to locate her. She was last seen on May 14, around 3 pm and had left her child waiting in the village.
A senior official of Kargil police, who requested anonymity, confirmed suspicions that the woman had indeed crossed over to Pakistan. It has emerged that she was divorced in 2020 and had been living separately with her son since then.
Top sources in Army intelligence revealed that the woman, reportedly intent on reaching “Pakistan at any cost,” had undertaken a long journey and made it to Attari, Amritsar. There, she allegedly asked a Border Security Force (BSF) guard about how to cross over to the Pakistani side earlier this month. “She was apprehended on suspicion, and her belongings, including her phone, were examined,” sources in the Army stated.
Meanwhile, her child is currently being looked after by the Juvenile Justice Board until her family members are able to reach Kargil to assume custody.
