JAMMU, April 8, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday emphasized the importance of shared civic responsibility in addressing pressing social issues, stating that public participation is essential alongside government efforts.

He made these remarks while launching a three-day divisional-level awareness programme organized by the School Education Department at the Convention Centre in Jammu.

“Public Participation Is Key”

Addressing students and stakeholders, the Chief Minister highlighted that while infrastructure development—such as roads, bridges, and hospitals—is the government’s responsibility, issues like cleanliness, environmental protection, and social well-being require collective action.

“Besides the government, the public has a crucial role in maintaining environmental safeguards and public assets,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the growing tendency to place the entire burden on the government, especially in matters like sanitation, urging citizens to adopt responsible daily habits.

Focus on Youth & Social Awareness

Calling upon the younger generation to lead change, Abdullah said that with sincere efforts, Jammu & Kashmir can match global standards.

“If you act on the pledges taken today, we can compete not just within the country but with the world,” he added.

Mental Health & Drug Abuse Concerns

Highlighting mental health, the Chief Minister stressed the need to end stigma and promote empathy.

“Even a few words of support can give someone the courage to overcome difficult times,” he noted.

On drug abuse, he warned that the fight cannot be won by the government alone and called for active involvement from civil society, educational institutions, and religious leaders.

Environmental Responsibility

Advocating meaningful environmental action, Abdullah suggested replacing ceremonial gestures with impactful contributions.

“Instead of shawls, plant trees in our name. Even if a few survive, it will be a lasting contribution,” he said, underlining the shared duty of protecting the environment.

Advice to Students

He also advised students to limit excessive screen time and focus on holistic development, expressing confidence that youth can drive positive societal change.

Conclusion

The Chief Minister’s address reinforced the idea that sustainable progress and social well-being can only be achieved through a partnership between the government and citizens.
