Jagdalpur, October 23, 2026 : President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said Chhattisgarh was moving rapidly towards development after years of suffering caused by Naxal violence, crediting the combined efforts of the Central and state governments for the progress made in tackling extremism.

Addressing the Bastar Dussehra Festival 2026 at Lalbag Maidan in Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district, the President expressed confidence that tribal communities, particularly young people, would play an important role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Murmu said new opportunities for development were emerging across Chhattisgarh and congratulated the Centre and state government for their efforts to accelerate progress in the region.

Tribal Entrepreneurship and Inclusive Development in Focus

The President said she had been informed that initiatives to provide financial assistance to tribal entrepreneurs and connect them with markets had gained momentum.

She expressed hope that these measures would strengthen economic opportunities for tribal communities and contribute to the broader goal of achieving equitable development under the vision of a developed India by 2047.

Murmu emphasised that tribal youth would actively participate in the country’s development journey, highlighting the importance of ensuring that communities in historically affected regions benefit from emerging opportunities.

President Calls Trees ‘Living Gods’

Alongside development, the President delivered a strong message on environmental conservation, urging people to protect forests, plant more trees and preserve nature for future generations.

Describing trees and plants as “living gods”, Murmu said they provide essential resources such as water, air, food, fruits, flowers and medicinal products that sustain human life.

She observed that while worshipping trees is part of many traditions, people must also take practical responsibility for planting and nurturing them.

The President stressed that forests, hills and mountains are invaluable gifts of nature. Although people depend on natural resources to meet their needs, she said, they also have a duty to replenish what they use and protect the environment.

Collective Pledge for a Greener Future

Murmu appealed to tribal communities and people from all sections of society to plant trees on agricultural land, barren land and other available open spaces.

She said collective efforts were necessary to preserve the earth’s greenery and ensure that future generations inherit a healthy and prosperous environment.

Her message placed environmental protection alongside economic development, highlighting the importance of balancing progress with the conservation of natural resources.

Bastar’s Ramayana Connection Highlighted

Referring to Bastar’s cultural and religious significance, the President recalled the region’s association with the Ramayana and its traditional identification with Dandakaranya, linked to Lord Ram’s period of exile.

Murmu said preserving the sanctity of the region was a collective responsibility.

She also reflected on the role of forest-dwelling communities in the Ramayana, suggesting that tribal communities may have contributed to the struggle against Ravana alongside sages and the Vanara Sena.

The remarks highlighted the importance of recognising tribal heritage and its place in India’s cultural traditions.

Leaders Attend Bastar Dussehra Celebrations

Governor Ramen Deka and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also addressed the event, which brought together cultural heritage, development priorities and environmental awareness.

The President’s address underscored three key priorities for Chhattisgarh: moving beyond the legacy of Naxal violence, expanding opportunities for tribal communities and protecting the forests and natural resources that sustain the region.
