Srinagar, September 4, 2025 : The Ministry of Railways has approved two significant railway projects in Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving operational efficiency in the region.
The first project involves the 40.2 km Baramulla–Uri rail line, which will extend the railway network to the border town of Uri near Kaman Post. The line will feature three Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and nine Road Over Bridges (ROBs), ensuring uninterrupted, all-weather access to an area often affected by winter road blockades.
The project also carries strategic significance, as Baramulla and Uri tehsils host major Army establishments close to the Line of Control (LoC). The line will be constructed as a single Broad-Gauge track, requiring fresh land acquisition along the route.
The second project entails the 73.5 km doubling of the Qazigund–Budgam stretch, designed to decongest the existing single line up to Baramulla. This development will facilitate smoother passenger and freight movement and support military logistics, including the operation of special trains carrying troops and equipment.
“With the Katra–Banihal section scheduled for commissioning in 2025, the Kashmir rail corridor will become fully integrated with the national railway network, opening new avenues for passenger growth and freight traffic,” the Railway Ministry statement said.
These projects are expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency, bolster regional security logistics, and enhance economic activity by providing reliable all-weather connectivity to remote and strategically sensitive areas.
