New Delhi, January 25, 2026 : On the occasion of Republic Day 2026, gallantry and service medals have been conferred upon 982 personnel from police forces, fire services, home guards, civil defence and correctional services across the country, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced.
According to the official statement, the honours include 125 Gallantry Medals (GM), recognising acts of exceptional courage and bravery in the line of duty. Personnel deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir operational theatre received the highest number of bravery awards (45), followed by 35 medals for personnel operating in Naxal violence-affected areas, and five medals for those posted in the North Eastern region.
Among the recipients, four fire service personnel were also awarded gallantry medals for their courageous rescue operations.
In the state-wise breakup, the Jammu and Kashmir Police emerged as the top recipient of gallantry medals with 33 awards, followed closely by Maharashtra Police with 31 medals, Uttar Pradesh Police with 18, and Delhi Police with 14.
Among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the CRPF stood out as the only force to receive gallantry citations, securing 12 bravery medals.
In addition to gallantry awards, the honours list includes 101 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM), recognising long-standing dedication, exemplary service records and commitment to duty.
As per the official definition, a gallantry medal is awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery, including saving lives and property, preventing crime or arresting criminals, while consciously risking one’s own life. The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for an exceptional service record, whereas the Meritorious Service Medal recognises valuable service marked by devotion, sincerity and professional excellence.
