Mogadishu | October 28, 2026 : A deadly ambush in southern Somalia has reportedly killed at least 20 Somali soldiers, according to a military officer who survived the attack, highlighting the continuing security challenges posed by the al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab.

The attack took place on Monday near Jameeca village in Burhakaba district, within the Bay region. The militants claimed responsibility, while Somalia’s Defence Ministry acknowledged damage to military vehicles but did not publicly disclose troop casualty figures.

🔴 Conflicting Claims Over Casualties

Abshir Abdikarim, a military officer travelling with the convoy, told The Associated Press that he saw at least 20 fellow soldiers dead after the attack.

According to his account, government troops had advanced from Leego towards Jameeca before engaging militants in heavy fighting. Some soldiers previously reported missing reportedly reached Baledogle on Tuesday, while others remained unaccounted for.

The Defence Ministry said government forces killed approximately 75 militants and wounded another 56 during hours of fighting.

Al-Shabaab, however, claimed that it killed 321 soldiers and captured personnel and military equipment. These figures and claims have not been independently verified, and the competing accounts remain disputed.

💥 Explosives and Military Equipment

The Defence Ministry said militants used explosives-laden vehicles to attack army vehicles, damaging some of them. Al-Shabaab claimed it seized Turkish-supplied armoured vehicles, armed pickup trucks, supply vehicles, weapons and ammunition.

The extent of the reported equipment losses and the status of the allegedly captured soldiers remain unclear.

⚔️ Al-Shabaab Continues to Challenge Somali Authorities

Al-Shabaab has fought Somalia’s government for nearly two decades, relying on guerrilla warfare, suicide bombings and targeted assassinations.

Although African Union troops pushed the group out of Mogadishu in 2011, the militants have continued operating across parts of central and southern Somalia.

Somali authorities have reported territorial gains during a military campaign backed by the United States, but access restrictions have made some battlefield claims difficult to verify independently.

🇸🇴 A Wider Security Challenge

The latest attack comes amid a separate struggle for control of South West state. Government troops clashed last month near Baidoa with militias loyal to former regional president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, who resigned after federal forces seized the city in March.

Somalia’s Defence Ministry has said government forces will continue targeting Al-Shabaab positions and disrupting attempts by the group to regroup.

📌 The Situation at a Glance

  • Reported military deaths: At least 20, according to a surviving officer.
  • Government’s account: Approximately 75 militants killed and 56 wounded.
  • Al-Shabaab’s claim: 321 soldiers killed, with prisoners and military equipment allegedly captured.
  • Independent verification: The competing casualty figures and capture claims remain unverified.

The ambush underscores the continuing threat posed by Al-Shabaab and the difficulty of establishing reliable battlefield figures amid an ongoing conflict.

This post is based on the supplied report. Casualty figures and claims made by the parties involved have not been independently confirmed.
