Srinagar, June 2, 2026 : In a development that has sparked concern among tourism and hospitality stakeholders across Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar International Airport will suspend all flight operations for a fortnight from October 1 to October 15, 2026, to facilitate critical runway maintenance and repair works.

Officials said the closure is part of a broader maintenance plan aimed at ensuring long-term operational safety and improving airport infrastructure. However, the timing of the shutdown has triggered apprehensions among local businesses, as it coincides with the Durga Puja holiday season, traditionally one of the busiest tourism periods for the Kashmir Valley.

Every year, thousands of tourists, particularly from West Bengal, visit Kashmir during the festive season, significantly boosting the local economy. Travel operators, hoteliers, tour guides, transport providers, and traders fear that the suspension of air services could result in large-scale booking cancellations and substantial financial losses.

According to airport authorities, the maintenance programme will be implemented in phases. Beginning in July 2026, airport operations will remain suspended two days every week to facilitate preliminary repair work. The phased schedule will culminate in a complete shutdown of flight operations from October 1 to October 15.

Officials emphasized that the runway repairs are essential to maintain operational standards and ensure passenger safety. They noted that flight operations at Srinagar Airport have already been functioning under restrictions since April 6, following the issuance of a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) by the Indian Air Force.

The ongoing engineering works have significantly reduced the airport’s operational hours. While flights previously operated until late evening, services are currently restricted to the period between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, impacting airline schedules and passenger convenience.

The announcement of the October closure has intensified concerns within the tourism industry, which relies heavily on seamless air connectivity. Stakeholders argue that suspending operations during one of the year’s peak travel windows could adversely affect tourist arrivals and create ripple effects across various sectors linked to tourism.

Industry representatives are urging authorities to explore alternative scheduling options or mitigation measures that could minimize disruption to travelers and businesses. Many believe that preserving connectivity during the festive season is crucial for sustaining tourism momentum and protecting the livelihoods of thousands dependent on the sector.

As preparations for the maintenance work move forward, tourism operators and local businesses will be closely watching for any possible adjustments to the schedule that could help reduce the anticipated economic impact on the Valley.
