Jammu, February 3, 2026 : Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo on Tuesday said that strengthening existing medical infrastructure remains the government’s top priority, adding that creation of new Medical Blocks would be considered only after assessing need, feasibility, manpower and infrastructure.
Replying to a question by MLA Sheikh Ahsan Ahmad during the Budget Session of the J&K Legislative Assembly, the minister said Srinagar district, with a population of over 15 lakh, currently has one Medical Block and four Medical Zones, all functioning under the administrative control of the Chief Medical Officer, Srinagar.
She informed the House that healthcare delivery in the district is running smoothly and satisfactorily with existing manpower and infrastructure, and no major issues have been reported under the present setup. The four Medical Zones and one Medical Block collectively cater to eight Assembly constituencies.
Sakeena Itoo further said that Srinagar’s healthcare system is significantly strengthened by premier institutions such as GMC Srinagar, SKIMS Soura, SMHS Hospital, JLNM Hospital, Gousia Hospital and SKIMS Bemina, which help manage patient load and enhance service delivery across the district.
