BANGKOK, OCTOBER 05, 2026 : Thailand is preparing for another spell of heavy rain and possible flash flooding as the death toll from widespread flooding since mid-September has risen to 31, authorities said on Monday.

The Thailand Meteorological Department warned that thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected across large parts of upper Thailand from Monday through Wednesday, raising the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

Heavy Rain Forecast Across Several Regions

Forecasters have also warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of central, eastern and southern Thailand, including Bangkok, over the coming weekend.

The latest forecast has raised concerns that areas already affected by flooding could face renewed inundation.

Bangkok Continues Flood-Management Efforts

Several parts of Bangkok were inundated last week following days of torrential rain. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate, while flooding caused significant disruption to daily life and transport.

Although conditions in the capital have largely improved, floodwaters remain in some low-lying areas.

Bangkok authorities said they were taking preventive measures to limit the impact of additional rainfall. These include draining water from major canals to increase their capacity and deploying additional water pumps in areas considered particularly vulnerable to flooding.

More Than 3.5 Million People Affected

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, more than 3.5 million people nationwide remained affected by flooding as of Monday.

The 31 reported deaths occurred across eight provinces, including four fatalities in Bangkok.

The scale of the flooding has placed significant pressure on local authorities and emergency-response systems as communities continue to deal with damaged homes, infrastructure and disrupted services.

Government Approves Emergency Funds

In response to the extensive damage, the Thai government last week approved more than 4.1 billion baht, approximately US$122 million, in emergency funding for flood recovery.

Authorities are now balancing recovery efforts with preparations for another period of potentially severe rainfall, as meteorologists continue to monitor weather conditions across the country.
