Srinagar, May 6, 2026 : A tragic incident unfolded at the iconic Dal Lake where an elderly tourist from the United States passed away during his stay on a houseboat, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as John David Anderson (83), who was visiting Kashmir along with his wife Judith Anne McCarthy. According to officials, Anderson complained of uneasiness late at night while staying on the houseboat.

Sensing the seriousness of his condition, he was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival, leaving the family and local authorities shocked.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated legal proceedings to ascertain the exact cause of death. Preliminary reports suggest a possible medical condition, but officials stated that a thorough investigation is underway to rule out any other factors.

The incident has cast a shadow over the otherwise busy tourist season in Srinagar, where houseboats on Dal Lake remain a major attraction for international visitors.

Authorities assured that all necessary protocols are being followed, and assistance is being extended to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
