NEW DELHI, October 4, 2025 : In a major push to enhance air connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that the operationalisation of Udhampur Airport has been finalised, while the proposed Kishtwar Airport is being included under the Regional Connectivity Scheme – “UDAN”.
Chairing a review meeting with Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha and AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar, Dr. Singh emphasised that these aviation projects will transform travel, boost regional development, and enhance security preparedness in the Union Territory.
Officials informed that Udhampur Airport could initially operate ATR 72-seater aircraft under the RCS-UDAN scheme, offering ticket fares nearly 50% lower than market rates.
“The Delhi–Udhampur airfare will be significantly cheaper than the Delhi–Jammu route, offering a cost-effective option even for Jammu-bound travellers,” officials explained.
A major portion of the fare will be subsidised through viability gap funding, making air travel affordable for students, professionals, and residents of the region. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has committed to begin operations within six months, using existing defence infrastructure for apron space without needing additional land in the initial phase.
Meanwhile, the J&K Government is being approached for land transfer to facilitate a new terminal building, enabling larger aircraft to operate from Udhampur in the future.
On Kishtwar Airport, the Minister said fresh feasibility and land assessment studies are being initiated after earlier attempts stalled over land acquisition issues. Referring to Kishtwar as an “Aspirational Agricultural District,” Dr. Singh said an airport there would be a game changer for the region’s agriculture and saffron trade, opening access to wider national markets.
He assured that he would personally coordinate with the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of J&K to expedite clearances and land requisition.
Dr. Singh also reviewed the ongoing ₹860 crore expansion of Jammu Airport, scheduled for completion by June 2026, which will enhance passenger capacity and align with the national plan to modernise aviation infrastructure.
“Improved air connectivity is not just about convenience—it’s a catalyst for economic growth, tourism, and integration of Jammu & Kashmir with India’s development mainstream,” Dr. Jitendra Singh said.
