SRINAGAR, August 19, 2026 : US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday enjoyed a traditional shikara ride on the world-famous Dal Lake during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, following a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar.
Gor arrived in Srinagar and called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his Gupkar residence. Soon after the meeting, the US envoy headed to Dal Lake, where he boarded a shikara near Nehru Park.
Accompanied by US Embassy officials and security personnel, Gor spent around an hour cruising across the iconic lake, taking in the scenic surroundings of Srinagar.
The visit came shortly after his meeting with Abdullah, during which the two discussed issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir and the region’s potential for greater engagement.
US May Reconsider J&K Travel Advisory
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gor indicated that the United States may reconsider its travel advisories for Jammu and Kashmir, citing steps taken by the central government and the Omar Abdullah-led administration to improve the security environment.
“The United States puts out travel warnings and every so often, we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements here today, but it is something we are going to look at,” Gor said.
Describing Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and an “incredibly beautiful place,” the US envoy said the security situation and travel advisories would continue to be reviewed.
The remarks assume significance for the region’s tourism sector, which has been seeking greater international confidence and a stronger return of foreign visitors.
Gor’s Dal Lake visit also provided a striking visual moment, with the US envoy experiencing one of Kashmir’s most iconic traditions against the backdrop of Srinagar’s famed waters and mountains.
His visit comes amid efforts by authorities to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism profile and project the region as a safe and attractive destination for visitors from across the world.
