Srinagar, April 16, 2026 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha emphasized the critical role of women in agriculture, stating that without women farmers, “every plate would be empty,” while addressing the Women Farmers Conference organized by Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited in Srinagar.

Highlighting their contribution, Sinha said women farmers are the backbone of global food security, working tirelessly while often being excluded from economic benefits. He called for greater recognition, access to resources, and policy support to promote women-led development in agriculture.

He noted that the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2026 as the International Year of Women Farmers, terming it a historic opportunity to recognize women not just as laborers, but as key drivers of agricultural growth.

The Lieutenant Governor urged:

  • Greater direct market access for women farmers
  • Development of technology tools tailored for women in agriculture
  • Financial inclusion, including loan access for landless women farmers
  • Increased allocation of resources across agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, and dairy sectors

He highlighted several government initiatives, including the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) and schemes like PM Kisan, which have seen significant participation from women farmers across Jammu and Kashmir.

Sinha stressed that empowering women in agriculture strengthens climate resilience, food security, and rural economies, adding that when women control resources and decision-making, communities prosper.

He also urged IFFCO to establish training centres, farmer service facilities, and support infrastructure such as mobile soil testing units in the region.

Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor announced the launch of a “Drug-Free Jammu & Kashmir” movement for the Kashmir Division from Srinagar on May 3, 2026, calling for active participation from women and youth.

The event witnessed participation from government officials, agriculture experts, women entrepreneurs, and members of self-help groups, celebrating the growing role of women as farmers, innovators, and leaders in the agri-sector.
