Jammu, January 15, 2026 : Deputy Inspector General of Police Shiv Kumar Sharma on Thursday said that the ongoing fog season poses a significant challenge on the security front, particularly during counter-terror and surveillance operations in the border districts of Samba and Kathua.
The DIG made the remarks while interacting with security personnel deployed on the ground, amid heightened vigilance following inputs about suspicious movement received on Wednesday.
“Information regarding the sighting of suspicious persons was received, after which an immediate response operation was launched. Multiple teams have been deployed and are conducting extensive searches. The operation is still underway,” Sharma told reporters.
He said the inputs were received from local sources, adding that the ground intelligence network is actively engaged in tracking suspicious activity in the region.
Referring to the ongoing anti-terror operation in Kathua, the DIG said a large-scale search operation was launched based on credible and reliable intelligence.
“The information is very dependable and we are acting upon it. However, due to operational sensitivity, we cannot share further details at this stage,” he said.
Sharma said Special Operations Group (SOG) teams, ground intelligence units and personnel from all police posts and outposts have been deployed, with sustained, area-wise searches being conducted, especially in view of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.
“This is the fog season, and fog creates multiple operational challenges — whether for drone surveillance or ground forces. Reduced visibility makes search operations extremely difficult,” the DIG said.
He reiterated that all police personnel remain on high alert and appealed to the public for cooperation.
“We urge citizens to immediately inform the police if they notice anything suspicious. Our teams are fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of the people,” he said.
The DIG further said that regular public outreach meetings are being held to sensitise residents.
“People are being repeatedly advised to report footprints, suspicious movement, unknown persons or any unusual activity without delay,” he added.
Sharma praised the role of vigilant citizens, saying timely information from locals has been crucial in strengthening the security grid.
“We have patriotic citizens who promptly alert the police whenever they notice suspicious activity,” he said.
Search operations across the twin border districts continue, and authorities said further updates will be shared as the situation develops.
