SRINAGAR, April 14, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving two major tunnel projects on NH-244 aimed at boosting connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
The approved projects include the Sudhmahadev–Dranga Tunnel (12.85 km) and the Singhpora–Vailoo Tunnel (38.61 km), both designed as uni-directional twin-tube tunnels with two-lane carriageways and paved shoulders. The total estimated cost of the projects stands at ₹9,779.42 crore.
Welcoming the decision, the Chief Minister said these strategically important tunnels will ensure all-weather connectivity and significantly improve access to the Chenab Valley and surrounding regions, which often face disruptions due to harsh weather conditions.
He noted that the projects will not only ease transportation but also act as catalysts for economic growth, tourism, and overall regional development.
Recalling his earlier efforts, Omar Abdullah mentioned that he had written to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister in June last year, urging expedited approval and inclusion of these projects under the National Highways (Original) [NH(O)] scheme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
He had also highlighted concerns over delays, pointing out that while other stretches of NH-244 were progressing, the absence of these tunnels was slowing down socio-economic progress in the Chenab region.
The approval is expected to bridge critical connectivity gaps and accelerate infrastructure development, providing a major boost to mobility and economic prospects in Jammu and Kashmir.
