SRINAGAR, April 24, 2026 : In a firm action to maintain law and order, police in Baramulla have booked six individuals under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly disrupting public peace in the Sopore area.
According to officials, the action was taken by Sopore Police following their involvement in recent student protests that turned violent, including incidents of vandalism and attempts to incite unrest.
The individuals detained have been identified as:
- Umar Akbar Hajam
- Salman Ahmed Shala
- Altaf Ahmed Sheikh
- Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar
- Muzammil Mushtaq Changa
- Majid Firdous Dar
All six have been detained after obtaining warrants from the District Magistrate and have been lodged in District Jail Bhadarwah.
Police stated that the accused were actively involved in:
- Instigating unrest
- Damaging property
- Attempting to disturb public order
Authorities emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against activities threatening peace and stability, adding that more individuals linked to the disturbances are being identified and may face similar action.

The unrest follows protests at a government girls’ school in Sopore earlier this month after allegations of sexual assault surfaced against a senior lecturer, who has since been booked and suspended pending investigation.
Officials reiterated that strict legal measures will continue to ensure law and order is maintained across Jammu and Kashmir.
