SRINAGAR, April 24, 2026 : A sharp political confrontation has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately delaying the restoration of statehood as a “punishment” to the people for voting in favor of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.
The remarks came a day after Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma launched a scathing attack on the Omar Abdullah-led government, alleging non-performance, corruption, and misplaced priorities.
🔥 Omar Abdullah Hits Back
Responding strongly, Omar Abdullah suggested that BJP’s statements reflect frustration and indirectly admit that statehood is being withheld due to electoral outcomes.
He also took a swipe at Sharma, sarcastically remarking that the Assembly functioned “more productively” in his absence, referencing his recent return from Assam.
🗣️ BJP’s Criticism
Sunil Sharma, on the other hand, accused the government of:
- Failing to deliver on key promises like free LPG cylinders, electricity benefits, and jobs
- Prioritizing events like marathons and skiing over governance
- Lack of administrative outreach and alleged corruption in government offices
He also reiterated that statehood restoration should not be tied to any individual leader or political family.
🏛️ Political Tensions Rise
The exchange highlights deepening political tensions in the Union Territory, especially around the sensitive issue of restoration of statehood, which remains a major demand across political parties and the public.
The debate continues to intensify, with both sides trading accusations over governance, accountability, and the future political status of the region.
