Srinagar, April 28, 2026 : Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced a major housing initiative for J&K, stating that around five lakh families living in ‘kuchha’ houses will be provided permanent ‘pucca’ homes after physical verification.
Addressing a public function, Chouhan said the initiative is part of the Prime Minister Awas Yojana, with a recent survey identifying families lacking permanent housing. He assured that the government is committed to ensuring that no family in the Union Territory remains without a proper home.
Reaffirming the Centre’s focus on development, the minister said Jammu and Kashmir remains a top priority under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that both “development and goodwill” are central to the government’s approach.
Alongside housing, Chouhan also launched 330 road projects spanning 1,600 km under PMGSY (Batch-II), worth ₹3,550 crore, aimed at improving connectivity in 363 remote habitations.
Highlighting women empowerment, he noted that ₹4,000 crore is being disbursed to strengthen self-help groups, with nearly two lakh “Lakhpati Didis” already emerging in the region.
The minister emphasized that efforts are underway to boost farmers’ income and ensure inclusive growth, aligning with the broader vision of a ‘Viksit Jammu and Kashmir’.
