NEW DELHI, May 9, 2026 : In a major top-level military appointment, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani (Retd), a noted expert on Pakistan and China affairs, has been appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
He will succeed Gen Anil Chauhan, who is set to complete his tenure as the country’s senior-most military commander on May 30.
Currently serving as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), Lt Gen Subramani is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s defence preparedness and accelerating military reforms.
Officials said his primary mandate will focus on implementing the ambitious military theaterisation plan aimed at enhancing operational coordination and synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The move is considered crucial for modern warfare readiness and integrated defence strategy.
Widely regarded as a strategic expert on Pakistan and China, Lt Gen Subramani brings extensive operational and policy experience at a time when India continues to face evolving regional security challenges along both western and northern borders.
The appointment is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening India’s tri-services command structure and long-term national security framework.
