SRINAGAR, June 4, 2026 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday reaffirmed India’s enduring commitment to the principle of unity in diversity, stating that the country has, for thousands of years, embraced coexistence and extended equal respect to all faiths while nurturing a civilisational ethos rooted in harmony and mutual understanding.
Addressing the ‘Rishiwar Inter-Faith Conference 2026’ in Srinagar, Sinha said that respect for all religions and peaceful coexistence have been integral to India’s philosophical and cultural traditions since ancient times.
“While many nations across the world continue to grapple with the challenge of coexistence, diversity has always been our natural way of life. Whereas several societies have had to devise mechanisms to preserve unity, India has seamlessly embraced and practiced the values of coexistence for thousands of years,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor noted that the ideals of harmony and collective progress are deeply embedded in India’s ancient scriptures. Referring to the Rigveda, he said the sacred text teaches that hearts and minds should remain united, with common goals, shared emotions and collective aspirations guiding society.
“Our aim should be the same, our feelings in harmony and our thoughts united. This timeless message remains as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago,” he observed.
Sinha further said that scholars and researchers across the world acknowledge that the concept of equal regard for all religions finds its philosophical foundations in India’s ancient traditions.
“When I reflect on the values and philosophies that India has gifted to humanity, it becomes evident that through both thought and action, our Vedas, Upanishads, saints and seers have illuminated a path towards lasting peace and universal brotherhood,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of collective responsibility, the Lieutenant Governor said every section of society must work together with a shared commitment to the welfare of humanity.
“Every thread of society must be woven together. We must advance with a common purpose and dedication to the well-being of all. That is exactly what humanity needs today. The principle of equal respect for all religions is India’s most precious gift to the world, and it must be continuously nurtured so that every community can prosper in unity,” he said.
Highlighting recent public initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir, Sinha praised the remarkable response received during the three phases of the Vande Mataram initiative, describing the participation as extraordinary and reflective of the people’s deep-rooted patriotism and commitment to nation-building.
The Lieutenant Governor also lauded the widespread support for the ‘Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan’ (Drug-Free Jammu and Kashmir Campaign), saying the campaign has evolved into a meaningful social movement driven by public participation.
“The involvement of people from all walks of life has been organic, inspiring and encouraging. Such collective efforts demonstrate society’s determination to build a healthier and brighter future,” he said.
Calling for greater community engagement, Sinha urged citizens, educational institutions, religious leaders and civil society organisations to actively contribute to the anti-drug campaign and transform it into a sustained people’s movement.
He stressed that only through collective action and social responsibility can Jammu and Kashmir achieve the vision of a drug-free, healthy and progressive society.
The conference brought together religious scholars, community leaders and intellectuals from different faiths, providing a platform to promote dialogue, mutual understanding and the shared values of peace, harmony and coexistence.
