JAMMU, June 4, 2026: In a major boost to heritage tourism and cultural preservation in Jammu, a state-of-the-art heritage complex showcasing Dogra culture, cuisine, history and entertainment has opened its doors to visitors at the historic Mubarak Mandi Palace. The newly launched ‘Royal Legacy’ complex is expected to transform the iconic Dogra-era palace into a premier cultural and tourism destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
Situated in the heart of Jammu’s old walled city, Mubarak Mandi Palace served as the principal seat of the Dogra rulers who governed the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir until the mid-20th century. Construction of the sprawling palace complex began in 1824 and continued over several decades, making it one of the region’s most significant historical landmarks.
Developed under the Jammu Smart City initiative and supervised by the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society, the Royal Legacy project involved extensive restoration and renovation work aimed at preserving the palace’s traditional Dogra architectural character while introducing modern visitor facilities.
According to General Manager Shiv Kumar, the heritage complex offers a unique blend of education, entertainment and cultural immersion.
“The facility features an open-courtyard library, a first-of-its-kind 12D theatre, indoor and outdoor dining spaces with a seating capacity of around 150 guests, and a heritage-themed ambience designed to provide visitors with a royal experience while retaining the grandeur of the palace,” Kumar said.
The project has been conceived as a dedicated platform to promote the rich legacy of Dogra culture, traditions and cuisine while creating a complete family-oriented tourism destination.
A major attraction of the complex is its specialized library, which focuses exclusively on the history, heritage and cultural evolution of Jammu and Kashmir. The collection enables visitors to explore the region’s rulers, leaders, historical events and cultural traditions within an authentic heritage environment.
“The library focuses extensively on Dogra culture and history. It allows visitors, especially children and students, to learn about Dogra traditions, important battles and historical developments that shaped the region. It is an excellent opportunity to understand and appreciate our rich cultural heritage,” Kumar said.
Adding to the attraction is a dedicated gaming and recreational zone for children, designed to make the complex appealing to visitors of all age groups.
Among the standout features is the 12D Theatre, described as the first facility of its kind in Jammu, offering immersive entertainment experiences for families.
“Visitors can read historical material, watch animated and educational films, and enjoy various recreational activities while simultaneously learning about the region’s heritage,” Kumar added.
Adjacent to the Royal Legacy complex is the renowned Dogra Art Museum, which houses a rich collection of ancient and medieval artefacts, rare manuscripts, traditional paintings, weapons and historical objects linked to the Dogra rulers and the history of Jammu and Kashmir.
Food enthusiasts visiting the complex can also experience authentic Dogra cuisine, one of the project’s primary attractions.
“While we serve Indian, Chinese and Japanese dishes, our specialty remains traditional Dogra cuisine. The idea is to provide visitors with a complete experience combining heritage, learning, entertainment and regional culinary traditions,” Kumar said.
The interiors of the heritage hub have been artistically decorated with paintings inspired by the celebrated Basohli School of Art, one of the region’s most renowned miniature painting traditions.
“The walls have been adorned with artworks based on historical themes and inspired by the Basohli art form, reflecting the region’s rich cultural identity,” he said.
A team of professional designers and artists from Delhi was engaged to conceptualize and execute the interior décor. The design process took approximately 15 days, while the intricate detailing and finishing work required more than a week to complete.
“We made every effort to provide the facility with a distinct heritage character, and the response from visitors has been extremely encouraging. People are appreciating the ambience, exploring the complex and capturing memories through photographs,” Kumar said.
The Royal Legacy project has been developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jammu Smart City Limited and the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society.
Officials also revealed that a multi-level parking facility is currently under construction near the palace complex to improve visitor convenience and strengthen tourism infrastructure in the heritage zone.
With its unique combination of history, culture, art, cuisine and modern entertainment, the Royal Legacy Heritage Hub is poised to become a landmark attraction, offering visitors an immersive journey into Jammu’s glorious Dogra heritage.
