ANANTNAG, June 10, 2026 : National Conference President and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the leadership of Jammu & Kashmir that the Centre remains committed to restoring statehood to the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters in Anantnag district, Abdullah said Prime Minister Modi recently conveyed to Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the promise regarding statehood restoration would be fulfilled.
PM Reiterates Commitment on Statehood
According to Farooq Abdullah, the Prime Minister has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood, an issue that has remained at the center of political discussions in the region.
“Prime Minister has recently told Omar that he will fulfil his promise regarding the restoration of statehood,” Abdullah said while addressing the media.
The statement comes amid continued demands from political parties and stakeholders in Jammu & Kashmir seeking the restoration of full statehood following the region’s reorganization in 2019.
National Conference Awaiting Centre’s Decision
Farooq Abdullah emphasized that the National Conference is waiting for the Union Government to implement its commitment and take concrete steps toward restoring statehood.
He noted that while administrative matters remain important, the party’s primary focus continues to be the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s constitutional status as a state.
“We are waiting for the Centre to fulfil its promise,” Abdullah said, reiterating the party’s long-standing position on the issue.
Demand Extends Beyond Business Rules
Responding to questions regarding the delay in approval of business rules for the Jammu & Kashmir government, Abdullah said that the National Conference’s concerns go beyond administrative procedures.
According to him, the party seeks not only the approval of governance-related business rules but also the restoration of statehood, which it considers a key democratic commitment.
He described statehood restoration as a promise made by the government and expressed hope that it would be implemented in due course.
Protest Planned During Monsoon Session
In a significant political move, the National Conference has announced plans to hold a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The demonstration is intended to press for the restoration of statehood and draw national attention to the party’s demand.
The decision was taken during a meeting of National Conference legislators chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on June 3, 2026.
