Srinagar, June 18, 2026 : Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has designated 14 senior professors as Heads of Departments (HoDs) under the institution’s rotational headship policy, with renowned surgeon Prof. (Dr.) M.R. Attri assuming charge as Head of the Department of Surgery until November 30, 2027.

The appointments were made through an official order issued by GMC Srinagar Principal Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan Shah, in accordance with the Government’s rotational headship policy for medical colleges.

Dr M.R. Attri Takes Charge of Surgery Department

Prof. Attri, a distinguished advanced laparoscopic and hernia surgeon, brings over 35 years of experience in patient care, medical education and research to the position. He has earned national recognition for his contributions to minimally invasive surgery and has authored more than 100 research papers published in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

Over the years, he has held leadership roles in several prestigious surgical organisations and has served as a mentor, examiner and educator for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students across India.

Outlining his vision for the department, Prof. Attri said his priority would be to strengthen patient care, education, research and innovation.

“Our focus will be on advancing minimally invasive and robotic surgical services, strengthening subspecialty surgical care, enhancing resident training, promoting impactful clinical research, and integrating emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, into surgical practice and education,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of ethical medical practice, multidisciplinary collaboration, faculty development and nurturing future surgical leaders.

Other Key Departmental Appointments

Under the rotational policy, several other senior faculty members have also been designated as HoDs:

  • Prof. (Dr.) Afroz Ahmad Khan – Head, Ophthalmology (till May 31, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Lateef Ahmad Wani – Head, Pathology (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Ismail – Head, Medicine (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Suhail Ahmad Gilkar – Head, Physiology (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Javid Iqbal Naqshbandi – Head, Anaesthesiology (till April 30, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Khurshid Ahmad Dar – Head, Respiratory Medicine (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Imtiyaz Hussain Dar – Head, Orthopaedics (till April 30, 2027)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Shah – Head, Anatomy (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Showkat Ahmad Showkat – Head, ENT (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Naikoo – Head, Cardiology (till May 31, 2027)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Mushood G. Nabi – Head, Radiation Oncology (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Roohi Ashraf – Head, Biochemistry (till June 16, 2028)
  • Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Iqbal Pandit – Head, Community Medicine (till June 16, 2028)

Effective From June 17

According to the official order, all appointments came into effect from June 17, 2026. The tenure of each HoD has been determined in line with the rotational headship policy and the remaining service period of the respective faculty members.

The appointments are expected to strengthen academic leadership, enhance departmental functioning and further improve patient care, teaching standards and research output at one of Jammu and Kashmir’s premier medical institutions.
