Poonch, July 14, 2026 : A devastating lightning strike in the upper reaches of Surankote in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district claimed the lives of more than 50 domestic animals early Tuesday, causing significant losses to a local livestock owner.
According to officials, the lightning struck a herd of livestock at Ranjati Dhok, killing 50 sheep and goats, one buffalo, and one cow belonging to Shokat Hussain, a resident of Dhandi Dhara.
Fortunately, Shokat Hussain escaped the incident without injuries. However, the sudden natural calamity resulted in heavy economic losses, as livestock remains the primary source of livelihood for many families residing in the remote hilly areas of the district.
Officials said the incident occurred during adverse weather conditions in the upper reaches of Surankote, where shepherds traditionally graze their animals during the summer months.
Separate Incident: Ox Electrocuted Along Border Fence
In a separate incident reported on Tuesday morning, an ox belonging to Lal Hussain, a resident of Degwar-Maldyana, died after coming into contact with a live electric wire near the border fence in Haveli tehsil.
Officials confirmed that the animal was electrocuted after touching the energized fencing infrastructure. No human injuries were reported in the incident.
The two incidents have highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by residents and livestock owners in border and mountainous regions, where extreme weather conditions and hazardous infrastructure can lead to sudden losses.
Local authorities have taken note of both incidents, while affected families are expected to seek compensation under the applicable government relief provisions.
