Srinagar, July 28, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating wider employment opportunities for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that while government jobs remain important, they alone cannot solve the unemployment challenge.

Addressing the valedictory session of the 77th State-Level Mega Job Fair at Amar Singh College, Srinagar, the Chief Minister stressed that the government must actively facilitate employment through private sector recruitment, entrepreneurship, skill development and industry partnerships.

The mega job fair was jointly organized by Desh Bhagat University, Punjab, Cluster University of Srinagar, NIELIT, Nations Development Association (NDA) and MY Bharat.

Government Must Create More Employment Avenues

Omar Abdullah said merely stating that government jobs are not the answer to unemployment is insufficient unless concrete alternatives are created.

“If we cannot provide government employment to every young person, then it becomes our duty to open more doors of opportunity. We cannot simply tell our youth to look elsewhere; we must create opportunities through private sector engagement, skill development and industry partnerships,” he said.

He added that Jammu and Kashmir’s youth possess immense talent and only need greater exposure and access to opportunities to excel.

Universities Must Go Beyond Awarding Degrees

The Chief Minister emphasized that universities and colleges should not limit their role to awarding degrees but should actively help students transition into the workforce through regular campus recruitment and career support.

He called for institutionalizing recruitment drives across all higher educational institutions, including the University of Kashmir, University of Jammu, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) and other colleges across the Union Territory.

According to Omar Abdullah, regular placement drives would enable students to secure employment even before completing their studies.

Mega Job Fair Delivers Positive Results

Highlighting the success of the recruitment drive, the Chief Minister revealed that:

  • Around 5,300 candidates registered for the job fair.
  • Nearly 470 candidates received job offers.
  • Another 430 candidates reached the final stage of recruitment, pending completion of interview formalities.

He noted that nearly 900 young men and women either secured employment or were on the verge of getting jobs, describing the outcome as a significant achievement for an initiative still in its early phase.

He expressed confidence that future job fairs would generate even greater employment opportunities.

Focus on Startups and Entrepreneurship

Omar Abdullah also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the startup ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said initiatives are underway to connect aspiring entrepreneurs with venture capital funding, institutional support and mentorship so that young innovators can establish their own enterprises instead of depending solely on traditional employment.

Offer Letters Distributed, MoU Signed

During the event, the Chief Minister handed over appointment letters to selected candidates and congratulated them on beginning their professional careers.

An MoU between Cluster University of Srinagar and Desh Bhagat University, Punjab was also signed in his presence to promote academic collaboration, skill development and employment-oriented initiatives.

The mega job fair brought together more than 50 reputed employers from across India, including companies with operations in the Gulf and Middle East, offering graduates, postgraduates, diploma holders and skilled youth direct employment opportunities through on-the-spot interviews, recruitment and career counselling.
