Srinagar, August 11, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case against BJP Pulwama district president Showkat Gayoor following allegations that he demanded money from a contractor through intimidation and threats.
The BJP has acted swiftly following the allegations, suspending Gayoor from all organisational posts and responsibilities with immediate effect and initiating disciplinary proceedings against him.
Contractor Alleges ₹5 Lakh Extortion Demand
The FIR was registered on Monday night at Newa Police Post in Pulwama following a complaint filed by contractor Mohammad Yaseen Ganie.
In his complaint, Ganie accused Gayoor of allegedly engaging in extortion, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, obstruction and harassment, besides making illegal monetary demands in connection with work being carried out for the Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Barthana.
According to the complaint, Gayoor allegedly repeatedly contacted Ganie by telephone and demanded ₹5 lakh, while allegedly threatening to prevent him and his workers from continuing the work.
₹54,000 Allegedly Paid Under Pressure
Ganie further alleged that he paid ₹54,000 in two instalments in November 2025, claiming that the payments were made under pressure and intimidation rather than voluntarily.
The complainant also alleged that Gayoor threatened him with action under the Public Safety Act (PSA) if his demands were not met.
The allegations are part of the complaint and will be subject to investigation and due legal process.
BJP Suspends Gayoor
Following the registration of the case, BJP state general secretary Mohammad Anwar Khan issued an order placing Gayoor under suspension after consultation with senior party leaders.
The order states that Gayoor has been suspended from all organisational posts and responsibilities, including his position as BJP district president, Pulwama, with immediate effect.
The suspension will remain in force pending the finalisation of disciplinary proceedings.
The development comes as police investigate the allegations and the BJP conducts its own internal disciplinary proceedings.
