PARIS, OCTOBER 18, 2026 : Paris police reported 855 arrests following violent clashes, looting and arson during protests across France, where demonstrators rallied against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools.

🔹 110,000 Protesters in Paris: The march in the French capital drew around 110,000 people, while demonstrations took place in cities across the country.

🔹 550,000 to 800,000 Protesters Nationwide: Authorities estimated that approximately 550,000 people participated in the protests, while organisers put the figure at around 800,000.

🔹 Clashes and Looting: Groups of masked protesters clashed with police, looted shops and damaged public buildings, including city halls and local government offices.

🔹 Casualties and Injuries: One person died of a heart attack, according to Paris police. Thirteen police and gendarmerie officers and two firefighters were also injured.

🔹 Damage in Central Paris: Broken glass, damaged storefronts and dislodged cobblestones were visible around Place de la République and other commercial and tourist areas following Saturday’s unrest.

🔹 Violence in Major Cities: In Marseille, protesters briefly entered the City Hall lobby and a police station was damaged. In Lyon, a fire broke out inside a tourist office.

🔹 Historic City Hall Gutted: In Limoges, a deliberate fire severely damaged the 19th-century City Hall, destroying much of the building and causing its roof to collapse. Authorities said the blaze was under control on Sunday.

🔹 Government Condemns Violence: French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez blamed some of the violence on radical far-left groups, saying others took advantage of the unrest to loot.

🔹 Mayors Seek Urgent Meeting: The mayors of Paris, Marseille and Lyon have requested a meeting with the prime minister to discuss the scale of the destruction and the seriousness of the situation.

PM Sébastien Lecornu’s Message: The French prime minister stressed that peaceful demonstrations have a place in the Republic, but arson, looting and attacks are unacceptable.

The unrest has raised fresh concerns over public safety, property damage and the challenges facing authorities as protests over the cost of living and public services spread across France.
