NAGPUR, SEPTEMBER 05, 2026 : Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has stressed that an independent judiciary and an independent, fair media are essential for a healthy democracy, while identifying the crisis of credibility as the biggest challenge facing the media sector.

Addressing the IIM Nagpur Media Conclave 2026 on the theme “Media, Leadership and the New World Order”, Gadkari said India’s democratic system rests on the four key pillars of legislature, executive, judiciary and media.

He called for a qualitative transformation in democracy and emphasised the importance of an independent, impartial and fair judiciary and media for the country’s progress and development.

‘CREDIBILITY IS MEDIA’S BIGGEST CAPITAL’

Gadkari said credibility, goodwill and honesty are among the most valuable forms of capital in the 21st century.

While credibility has declined across several sectors, he said the problem has become particularly serious in the media.

“Crisis of credibility is the biggest problem in the media sector.”

At the same time, Gadkari clarified that not every media organisation has lost its credibility, and urged the industry to work towards rebuilding public trust.

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS CHANGED THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE

Reflecting on the changing role of journalism, Gadkari said traditional media once claimed significant influence over electoral outcomes, but the rise of social media has fundamentally changed that trajectory.

He encouraged journalists to focus on issues concerning people, society and the nation, while reaching the common citizen through meaningful and quality journalism.

According to Gadkari, journalists and media organisations that protect their credibility and professional values will remain relevant in the future.

MEDIA’S ROLE IN STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY

The Union Minister also called for greater public awareness about social, economic and educational issues, saying that informed citizens and commitment to democratic values are essential for strengthening democracy.

He urged the media to protect social and national interests, strengthen democratic institutions and contribute to the transformation of knowledge.

Gadkari said such efforts could also contribute to India’s aspiration of becoming a “Vishwa Guru” (world leader).

IIM NAGPUR CONCLAVE

The event was attended by senior media personalities, including PTI CEO and Editor-in-Chief Vijay Joshi, Business Standard Editorial Director A.K. Bhattacharya and Blitz India Media Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Deepak Dwivedi.

IIM Nagpur Director Dr Bhimaraya Metri highlighted the important role of India’s youth in nation-building.

B. Prabhakaran, Managing Director of Lloyds Metals & Energy, highlighted India’s young population, start-up ecosystem and large market, while stressing the importance of entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
