New Delhi, September 18, 2026 ; Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a major international conference on environment and climate on Saturday, bringing together leading environmental experts, judges, legal professionals and senior government officials from India and abroad.

Organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the two-day conference will focus on the theme “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics.” The event is aimed at strengthening dialogue and cooperation on some of the most pressing environmental and climate-related challenges facing countries and institutions.

The conference will feature participation from Supreme Court and High Court judges, district court judges, environmental experts, senior government officials, secretaries of various ministries and representatives of state judicial academies, according to an official statement.

A significant international component of the meet will be the participation of eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries. Their presence is expected to provide an opportunity for judicial institutions across jurisdictions to exchange experiences and approaches to environmental governance.

The conference will serve as a platform for sharing judicial perspectives, scientific knowledge, environmental governance practices and institutional experiences. Discussions are expected to examine how courts, governments and other institutions can respond more effectively to emerging environmental and climate challenges.

Among the key issues likely to receive attention are gaps in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement, along with the need for stronger institutional mechanisms to address environmental concerns.

The NGT said the conference will also facilitate dialogue on ways to improve environmental governance, institutional cooperation and coordinated responses to climate-related challenges.

With participation spanning the judiciary, government, scientific community and international representatives, the two-day gathering is expected to provide an important forum for discussing the evolving relationship between environmental protection, climate action and effective governance.
