Leh, May 16, 2026 : In a significant step towards strengthening higher education infrastructure in Ladakh, the Union Territory administration on Saturday signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Jammu for establishing a satellite campus in Leh.
Announcing the development, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena described the agreement as a “historic chapter” aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of Ladakhi youth by bringing world-class technical education closer to the region.
“A historic chapter of fulfilling the youth aspirations scripted today in Ladakh, with signing of a landmark MoU between UT administration and IIT Jammu for setting up a satellite campus in Leh,” the Lieutenant Governor said in a post on social media.
According to officials, the proposed satellite campus in Leh will initially offer academic programmes in Civil Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science.
The initiative is expected to open new opportunities for students in advanced research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment while reducing the geographical barriers faced by students seeking admission to premier technical institutions outside the region.
Officials said the project would help create a modern ecosystem for higher learning and technological advancement in Ladakh.
The MoU also envisages the future development of a full-fledged residential campus in Kargil as a centre of excellence in the coming years.
The Ladakh administration termed the initiative a major milestone in the Union Territory’s educational journey and reiterated its commitment to empowering local youth through quality education and institutional development.
The Lieutenant Governor also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting transformative educational and developmental initiatives in Ladakh.
The establishment of the IIT Jammu satellite campus is expected to significantly enhance access to technical education and encourage local talent to pursue careers in emerging and high-demand fields.
