JAMMU, June 1, 2026 : With just weeks remaining for the commencement of the annual Amarnath Yatra, senior civil and police officials on Monday conducted an extensive review of security and logistical arrangements to ensure the smooth, safe and successful conduct of the 57-day pilgrimage beginning on July 3.
The high-level inspection was led by Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti, who visited the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas, the primary base camp for pilgrims in Jammu, and assessed preparations across multiple departments.
Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp Gets Final Touches
Officials reviewed facilities including registration counters, RFID centres, accommodation blocks, sanitation infrastructure, healthcare services, security arrangements and other essential amenities for pilgrims.
Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said the visit was aimed at evaluating ground-level preparedness and ensuring timely completion of all pending works before the arrival of devotees.
“All necessary arrangements are being put in place at Bhagwati Nagar. Registration facilities, RFID services, health infrastructure, sanitation and accommodation arrangements were thoroughly inspected,” Kumar said.
He added that departments have been directed to complete all remaining works within stipulated timelines to facilitate a seamless pilgrimage experience.
June 10 Deadline For Completion Of Infrastructure
Officials informed that June 10 has been fixed as the deadline for completing major infrastructure works at the base camp.
The ongoing works include:
- Whitewashing and beautification of camp premises
- Installation of bus ticket booking counters
- Setting up of langars and cloakrooms
- Expansion of accommodation facilities
- Construction and maintenance of washrooms
- Strengthening power supply and lighting systems
- Provision of drinking water facilities
- Establishment of convenience stores
- Distribution facilities for prepaid SIM cards
- Installation of German hangars for temporary accommodation
The Fire and Emergency Services Department has been directed to conduct a comprehensive fire safety audit, while the Public Works Department has been tasked with blacktopping roads within and around the camp premises.
Meanwhile, the Power Development Department has been instructed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, adequate illumination and backup power arrangements throughout the Yatra period.
Multi-Layered Security Strategy Finalised
IGP Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti reviewed the deployment strategy for security personnel and emphasized strict implementation of security protocols at all lodgement centres and transit camps.
He directed officers to ensure proper lighting, surveillance and adherence to designated Yatra cut-off timings.
The IGP also conducted inspections in Kathua and Samba districts, reviewing security and facilitation arrangements along the Yatra route and directing officers to maintain heightened alertness throughout the pilgrimage season.
Security Review In Kathua
At Lakhanpur, one of the main entry points into Jammu and Kashmir, the IGP inspected:
- Base camp facilities
- Lodgement centres
- Reception points for pilgrims
- CCTV surveillance systems
- Access control mechanisms
- Frisking arrangements
- Traffic management plans
- Pilgrim assistance facilities
A detailed security review meeting was later held at the District Police Lines, Kathua, where SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma briefed officers regarding convoy protection measures, surveillance systems, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and emergency response plans.
The IGP stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between robust security measures and courteous behaviour towards pilgrims.
Enhanced Vigil Along Yatra Route
DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range Shridhar Patil directed field officers to conduct regular inspections of langars and lodgement centres while maintaining strict surveillance on suspicious elements and activities.
In Samba district, SSP Anuj Kumar briefed the police leadership on preparedness measures and deployment plans.
During the review, senior officers emphasized close coordination among:
- Jammu and Kashmir Police
- Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)
- Intelligence agencies
- Punjab Police
- Civil administration departments
Drone Surveillance And Anti-Sabotage Measures Strengthened
To address evolving security challenges, officials directed security agencies to intensify:
- Drone surveillance along the pilgrimage route
- Anti-sabotage operations
- Deployment of dog squads
- Security audits at vital installations
- Real-time monitoring through surveillance networks
Special focus is being placed on langars, lodgement centres, transit camps and vulnerable locations.
Security forces have also been instructed to strengthen round-the-clock domination of the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, border belts and sensitive areas through intensive naka checking, vehicle inspections and area patrols.
Pilgrimage To Begin On July 3
The annual Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3, 2026, through two routes:
- The traditional 48-kilometre Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district.
- The shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
The pilgrimage will conclude on August 28, 2026, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a safe, secure and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage for lakhs of devotees expected to visit the holy Amarnath Cave Shrine this year.
