Srinagar, May 31, 2026 : People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday expressed concern over the law and order situation in West Bengal, describing the developments following the recent Assembly elections as “appalling”.
Reacting to reports of an attack on opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee, Mufti criticised what she termed the worsening security environment in the state and questioned the functioning of institutions responsible for maintaining law and order.
In a post on social media platform X, the PDP chief alleged that the situation had deteriorated after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.
“The sad deteriorating law & order ever since BJP won the West Bengal elections is appalling to say the least. Where neutral institutions like the police are now being weaponised to turn a blind eye as murderous assaults are orchestrated against political opponents like Abhishek Banerjee,” Mufti wrote.
The former Chief Minister expressed concern over the reported attack and said democratic institutions must remain impartial and function without political influence.
She further questioned whether the developments unfolding in the state reflected the expectations of the electorate who participated in the elections.
“Is this the change people of West Bengal voted for? Certainly not,” she added.
Mufti’s remarks come amid heightened political reactions over incidents of post-election violence and allegations exchanged between rival political parties in West Bengal.
The comments are likely to add to the ongoing political debate regarding law and order, democratic institutions and political violence in the state following the conclusion of the Assembly elections.
The BJP and opposition parties have frequently traded accusations over incidents of political violence, with each side blaming the other for creating an atmosphere of confrontation and instability.
The latest statement from the PDP leader reflects growing concern among opposition voices over reports of attacks on political leaders and workers, while calls continue for impartial investigations and strict action against those responsible for any acts of violence.
