JAMMU, August 20, 2026 : The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is transforming the old rehri zone at Gandhi Nagar into a modern, organized and citizen-friendly food destination as part of its ongoing efforts to upgrade Jammu’s urban infrastructure.
JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav on Wednesday inspected the newly developing modern food zone and interacted with vendors who have been allotted the newly constructed food carts.
The initiative aims to provide street vendors with a cleaner, safer and more dignified vending environment while improving the overall appearance and functionality of the area.
22 Modern Food Carts Completed in First Phase
The site, which earlier housed an old rehri zone developed by the JMC, is being redeveloped into a modern food zone under the directions of the Commissioner.
The first phase has been completed with 22 modern food carts, while the project envisages a total of 120 food carts at the site.
The JMC is simultaneously developing supporting infrastructure to make the facility more convenient for vendors as well as visitors. The planned facilities include water supply, rooftop infrastructure, street lighting and regular sanitation and cleanliness arrangements.
Existing Licensed Vendors to Get Priority
The food carts will be allotted to vendors who were already operating in the area and possess valid licences.
The move is intended to upgrade their existing vending operations while providing them with improved facilities and helping transform the location into a well-planned and attractive food destination.
During his inspection, Dr Yadav reviewed the facilities being developed and held discussions with the vendors regarding their requirements and the functioning of the new food zone.
Focus on Cleanliness and Hygiene
The JMC Commissioner stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation at the facility.
He urged vendors to take ownership of the cleanliness of the food zone and appealed to citizens to cooperate with the JMC by helping maintain clean and orderly public spaces.
Dr Yadav said the transformation of the old rehri zone into a modern food zone reflects the JMC’s commitment to building a cleaner, better organized, modern and citizen-friendly Jammu, while ensuring improved facilities and opportunities for existing street vendors.
The project is expected to provide a more structured vending environment, enhance the area’s visual appeal and contribute to the broader effort to modernize public spaces across Jammu city.
