SRINAGAR, August 20, 2026 : US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday indicated that Washington may review its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, saying the United States periodically reassesses its travel warnings and that recent security measures could warrant a fresh evaluation.

Gor made the remarks during his maiden visit to Kashmir after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar.

“The US puts out travel warnings, and every so often we reevaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements today, but it is something we are going to look at,” Gor told reporters.

‘Steps Taken to Make Kashmir Safer’

The US envoy acknowledged steps taken by the Government to improve security in the region, saying authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir had taken significant measures to make the area safer.

He said Washington would examine whether the existing travel warning should be downgraded.

“This is a beautiful area, and I think a lot of Americans would enjoy coming here,” Gor said, signalling the potential for increased American tourist interest in Kashmir if the advisory is eased.

Gor Calls Kashmir an Important Part of India

During his interaction with reporters, Gor described his first visit to Kashmir as a “wonderful experience” and highlighted the region’s natural beauty.

“Everybody here knows I’m the US Ambassador to India, and this is an important part of India. I’m here visiting for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place, and so I’m thrilled to be here,” he said.

His remarks come amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the United States and Jammu and Kashmir, with discussions focusing on economic cooperation and expanding opportunities for greater engagement.

Meeting With Omar Abdullah

Gor described his meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as “very good” and “very cordial”, saying both sides discussed issues that would require follow-up in Washington and New Delhi.

In a post on X, the US Ambassador said the two sides discussed ways to deepen economic collaboration and create mutually beneficial opportunities for the United States and India.

Gor also said he enjoyed meeting the Chief Minister.

Omar Abdullah, meanwhile, described the meeting as positive and said discussions focused on bilateral relations as well as areas where the United States could engage more closely with Jammu and Kashmir.

“It was, as Ambassador Gor said, a very good meeting. We had an opportunity to discuss relations between our two countries, but with a specific focus on what the US can do with J&K,” Abdullah said.

‘Legacy Issues’ to Be Addressed

The Chief Minister acknowledged that certain “legacy issues” would take time to resolve, but expressed optimism that engagement between Jammu and Kashmir, the United States and the Government of India would expand in the coming years.

He said the dialogue would continue both between Ambassador Gor and Washington and between the J&K administration and the Government of India in New Delhi.

“We are hopeful and optimistic that the engagement between the USA and J&K will both widen and deepen in the years ahead,” Abdullah said.

Shikara Ride on Dal Lake

Following his official engagements, Ambassador Gor also experienced one of Kashmir’s most iconic attractions, taking a Shikara ride on Dal Lake.

The envoy boarded a Shikara at Nehru Park and returned after spending around an hour on the lake, adding a tourism-focused element to his first visit to the Valley.

Gor’s visit and his remarks on a possible review of the US travel advisory have generated considerable interest in Kashmir, particularly among tourism and business stakeholders who see improved international travel guidance as a potential boost to tourism, investment and wider economic engagement.
