Srinagar, April 8, 2026 : National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi on Wednesday strongly criticized the foreign policy of the Modi-led government, alleging that India was sidelined in ongoing diplomatic developments, particularly in the recent ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran.
Speaking to reporters in Budgam district of central Kashmir, Mehdi expressed concern that India had no role in mediation efforts, while Pakistan was reportedly chosen as a facilitator for negotiations.
“Today, India is nowhere in contention. The US selected Pakistan for negotiations and made it a mediator, even though India historically maintained friendly relations with Iran. This reflects a serious diplomatic setback,” Mehdi said.
Shift from Non-Alignment to Isolation?
The Srinagar Lok Sabha MP stated that India’s foreign policy had traditionally been rooted in principles of non-alignment and moral positioning on global issues. He contrasted this with what he described as a shift under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“India once stood firmly against imperialism and colonialism. Leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee advocated for the rights of Palestinians, which gave India a unique global standing,” he said.
Mehdi alleged that recent policy changes have weakened India’s diplomatic influence, not only in West Asia but also with neighboring countries including China, Bangladesh, and the Maldives.
Allegations on West Asia Policy
The NC leader also criticized India’s perceived alignment with Israel and the United States, claiming it affected India’s traditional balanced stance in the region.
Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s past visit to Israel, Mehdi said it sent the wrong signal at a sensitive time in West Asia. He further alleged that India failed to take a clear stand on key developments, including tensions involving Iran.
Concerns Over Regional Influence
Mehdi argued that India’s diplomatic space in the region is shrinking, stating that its absence in the recent US–Iran ceasefire process highlights a broader decline in influence.
He expressed hope that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran would hold, adding that continued conflict would only destabilize the region further.
Conclusion
The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and evolving alliances in West Asia, with questions being raised about India’s role and relevance in global diplomacy.
