JAMMU, April 30, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for the establishment of a dry (inland) port in Jammu & Kashmir to boost trade and exports, during the flagging-off ceremony of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express.
Thanking Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Centre for extending rail connectivity, Abdullah said the new service is not just a travel सुविधा but a major economic enabler for the region.
📦 Push for Dry Port to Boost Trade
The CM stressed that an inland port would:
- Enable customs clearance within J&K
- Eliminate dependency on other cities for exports
- Strengthen local trade and business ecosystem
He urged Union ministers, including Jitendra Singh, to take up the proposal with the Centre.
🚛 Rail Connectivity Driving Commerce
Highlighting the benefits of rail connectivity, Abdullah noted:
- Transportation of cement and vehicles (like Maruti cars) to Kashmir
- Shipment of Kashmiri fruits to other parts of the country
- Faster, cost-effective logistics for businesses
🚆 A Long-Awaited Dream Realised
Calling the Jammu–Srinagar rail link a historic achievement, Abdullah said people had waited decades for direct train connectivity.
- Capacity increased from 8 to 20 coaches
- Passenger capacity jumped from ~500 to 1400 यात्रियों
He also remarked on the train’s popularity, noting that demand has surged so much that booking seats has become competitive.
