JAMMU, October 14, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate several major infrastructure and development projects in the Union Territory of Ladakh on October 15, 2026. The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 11 AM, will be conducted through video conferencing from New Delhi, while Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and other senior dignitaries will participate from Leh.
The expanded Leh Airport is among the key projects expected to be inaugurated. Several other infrastructure initiatives, including major roads and bridges, are also scheduled for inauguration, with the objective of improving connectivity, strengthening infrastructure and facilitating the movement of civilians and defence personnel in the strategically important region.
Leh Airport Expansion to Boost Connectivity
The expanded Leh Airport is expected to significantly enhance Ladakh’s aviation capacity. Once operational, the state-of-the-art facility will be capable of handling up to 54 flights per day, nearly three times its existing capacity.
The expansion is expected to improve passenger-handling facilities, strengthen air connectivity and support Ladakh’s growing tourism sector and increasing travel requirements. The project forms part of the Centre’s broader efforts to modernise airport infrastructure and expand aviation capacity across the country.
Roads and Bridges to Strengthen Regional Infrastructure
Several new infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges constructed largely by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), are also expected to be inaugurated virtually by the Prime Minister.
These projects are expected to improve road connectivity for residents and facilitate logistical movement for defence forces in the region. Additional projects may also be launched during the programme.
Alongside the main ceremony in Leh, inauguration-related functions will be organised across all seven districts of Ladakh. Deputy Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police, socio-religious leaders and other dignitaries are expected to participate in the district-level programmes.
Prime Minister Modi will address the gathering after inaugurating the projects through video conferencing.
Centre–Ladakh Talks Also Scheduled for October 15
The same day will also witness a significant meeting between the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), among others, regarding the long-pending issues concerning Ladakh.
A delegation from the Union Home Ministry is expected to travel from New Delhi to Leh for the Sub-Committee meeting, which is likely to take place in the afternoon after the Prime Minister’s inauguration programme.
The discussions are expected to focus on the demand for a Union Territory-level elected body for Ladakh with legislative, financial and executive powers, along with the implementation of relevant provisions of Article 371, as raised in the ongoing dialogue.
According to officials, the Centre may outline the broad framework of the proposed UT-level body during the meeting. The Leh Apex Body is also expected to submit its response to nine queries raised by the Union Home Ministry concerning the proposed body’s structure.
Senior Dignitaries Expected to Participate
Apart from Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the inauguration ceremony in Leh is expected to be attended by Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, Kargil Hill Development Council Chairman Dr Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa Jan, former Leh Hill Council chairman Tashi Gyalson, senior bureaucrats and other dignitaries.
The October 15 programme is expected to mark a significant step in Ladakh’s infrastructure development while coinciding with renewed discussions on the region’s political and administrative demands.
