JAMMU, April 22, 2026 : Tensions flared in Jammu as BJP and Congress activists staged protests against each other over the Constitution amendment bill on women’s reservation.
Hundreds of BJP workers, led by J&K unit president and MP Sat Sharma, took out the ‘Jan Aakrosh Mahila Padyatra’ from Maharaja Hari Singh Park towards the Congress office, raising slogans and burning effigies of opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav. The administration deployed heavy barricading to prevent clashes.
BJP leaders accused opposition parties of obstructing women’s empowerment, alleging “selfish and dynastic politics” behind the bill’s failure in Parliament.
Meanwhile, Congress activists, led by Raman Bhalla, held a counter-protest, accusing the BJP of undermining democracy under the guise of women’s rights. Party leaders asserted their continued support for 33% reservation, while criticizing the government’s approach as politically motivated.
The protests highlight a sharp political divide over the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which aimed to implement women’s quota and expand Lok Sabha seats.
