New Delhi, April 17, 2026 : Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi sparked laughter in the Lok Sabha with a light-hearted remark during the debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill, saying that both he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi don’t have the “wife issue.”

Participating in discussions on key bills related to women’s reservation and delimitation, Gandhi emphasized the profound influence women have in shaping individuals and society.

“All of us have been influenced and taught by women in our lives—our mothers, sisters, and wives,” he said. In a humorous aside, he added, “Of course, the prime minister and myself don’t have the wife issue, so we don’t get that input, but we have our mothers and sisters.”

The comment came in response to a lighter moment initiated by Kiren Rijiju, who mentioned being teased at home for not writing a poem for his wife, unlike fellow minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Gandhi also praised his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for her speech in the Lok Sabha, joking that she achieved in five minutes what he hadn’t managed in 20 years—“making Amit Shah smile.”

The exchange added a moment of levity to an otherwise serious discussion on women’s representation and legislative reforms.
